The mixed-use development in the heart of the city occupies a challenging site with a minimal width of 35m and a length of 240m. The building splits into a 58- and a 45-story-tall volume; escalators connect the activity zones of the two towers diagonally. A "Green River" falls from the top - serving as a green facade; at the podium, it gently cascades to the street level as a semi-public park. Offices, hotel and residences have dedicated entrances and drop-off zones. A commercial arcade mirrors the sloped exterior space and connects directly to the different zones as well as to the metro.

This mixed-use development lies aside the SUltan Qaboos Grand Mosque. The podium presents an extensive open-air retail center that widens and narrows from three distinct plazas. The headquarters hovers majestically six stories above the ground and overlooks its surroundings like a spaceship. Four tilted and dematerialized super-columns beam employees and visitors to the flying platform. The hyperboloid structures not only serve as vertical access zones but also as light wells for the lower floors. Office space with restricted access spreads across the lover level; the upper level comprises areas for interaction with customers such as a service center, exhibition space, F&B outlet and event space. Below the spaceship lies a public plaza that connects to the adjacent cultural neighborhood.

The 60-key private island resort offers various beach villas - some facing the lively sea and reef and some the calm mangrove forest. Key amenities and F&B outlets assemble freely below a stretched roof. This arrangement addresses an operation during the wetter season and also defends against the strong sun. A key feature is the 100m lap/infinity pool that connects two islands. Cabanas and water lounges also make use of this unique location. A larger space behind the main beach is left open for events, such as bonfires and lechon roasting, or parties and sports activities.

The mixed-use project incorporates a constantly modified construction site and amends it to a shopping mall on the lower three levels and to guest rooms on the higher floors. The aggregate of volumes finds a monolithic appearance with an architectural wrapping that serves as brise soleil. Confident arches mark the various entrances of this development.

Mirroring the idea of large-scale, Arabic patterns used on the neighboring museum, a dynamically animated pattern is being applied, thus, appreciating the traditional logic of the ornament yet adding a contemporary twist to it.

The Sports Academy is an intervention and part of the master plan to elevate Al Nasr Club to a state-of-the-art sports and training hub. Located in the heart of Dubai, Al Nasr Club was founded 1945 and is the first and oldest club in the UAE. Al Nasr again is at the forefront and transforms the neighborhood not only into a state-of-the-art sports hub but also into an interconnected urban living space. Main axes have been expanded to allow urban functions to parade, the avenues congregate in a central, multi-functional plaza. This point of orientation includes 4km of walking and jogging tracks with exercising stations and recreational pockets connecting all the buildings. A highly diverse residential mix and new sporting facilities transforms this area into a vibrant place to be.

Nestled along Karakorum Highway in Upper Hunza, the picturesque settlement of Gulmit preserved its charismatic structure. An inventory was established to note architectural and structural merit as well as the history of the various buildings. Zoning plans and building codes were developed to preserve the original character of the settlement as well. This project is part of Tabeer e Nau, a visiting school for architects and creatives to develop with the local population (architectural) interventions that support a sustainable society. This private initiative was co-founded by Fischer Meyerhans Architects.

Hide-Out reinterprets the strip mall concept and combines it with the urban retreat idea. Diverse indoor and outdoor spaces cluster to larger arrangements to form neighborhood centers. Extensive greenery plays an integral part of the design to enhance visitors’ experience as well as improving the micro-climate. The two-story development creates intimate spaces along winding alleys on the ground floor and vast open areas with views to the horizon on the upper floor. A sophisticated yet simple modular layout allows to adapt the concept over time or to replicate it on another urban space somewhere else.

The royal estate on Palm Jumeirah merges the concept of traditional courthouses of the UAE with the typical room layouts of renaissance palaces. The concept of mashrabiyas, the wooden lattice works in front of street-sided windows to provide privacy, has been decontextualized and used on a structural level. Also the geometry thereof is free of any historic reference. The contemporary pattern, meaning the facade, opens and closes depending on the privacy level of the rooms behind.

Stretching over three plots on Palm Jumeirah, this estate had to portray a strong character of representation. While many of the organizational ideas refer to renaissance palaces, decorative elements take their inspiration from Art Deco. The axial building is lifted off the ground to create a “piano nobile.” The sea-sided façade dissolves the solid volume to create more secluded areas for private rooms. The internal arrangement is in line with the axial building and plays with the sequencing of rooms, the enfilade, to create an intricate story line.

The tidal mill dates back to the 15th Century with the last modification made in the 19th Century. This urban sliver has a front facade of barely four meters but reaches into the town's interlaced building structure for over fourty meters.

The ground floor is developed as a public blind alleys which are typical to historic towns of Portugal. The bar facing the town square makes use of the side walk and draws people towards commercial stalls, the central courtyard / vertical access and the coffee shop at the end.

Two one-bedroom apartments are located on each floor. Integrating the kitchen and the bathroom in a central cabinet creates a flexible, open floor plan for the young surf community.

Located on a small urban gap in a cul-de-sac of the historic town of Lisbon, this private residence uses a kinetic façade to temporarily occupy the public space and expand its narrow interior. Large sections of the façade open up and fold out to balconies and shading devices. The interior maintains a minimalist style: raw concrete surfaces contrast with light, wooden elements. Sliding doors separate alcoves with various uses - such as kitchen, work spaces, storage, cabinets - allowing the circulation space being used by multiple functions and leaving an organized, clean impression.

The three-story building shows a compact volume wrapped in a linear facade application that takes its inspiration from the traditional textile designs. The long-stretched and narrow volume builds a wall towards the main land and ensures a high degree of privacy on the sea side. The building completely opens towards the water with a curtain-wall glass façade shaded with sale-like louvers. High above the UNESCO site of Bay of Kotor thrones this iconic destination restaurant with a breath-taking panoramic view. The architecture adds to the experience. The shape of the diner derived from the sea urchin, which is common to the region, and merges it with futurism. The round openings speak the nautical language of portholes and frame the scenery when looking from inside out. In the night, the entire building inverts and turns into a lantern. Located on the 52nd and 53rd floor of the Address Sky View Hotel, the Observatory offers an action-packed experience: move outside the facade “Mission Impossible” style, slip down a cantilevering all-glass slide or walk the the 25m cantilevering glass floor and admire the world 219.5m below you. For those less in need of an adrenaline booster, the restaurant invites to enjoy the skyline of Dubai and the lounge gives a nice view onto the interactive kinetic wall, a parametric sculpture and a multi-media wall.

The design of this invited competition by the Ministry of Presidential Affair of the UAE reflects on the Arabic culture and interprets it in a contemporary way: the open ceiling is tiled with individual shades that imply a dome as well as a circular Arabic pattern. Porous wall cladding refers to the original building material of the region and serves as acoustic panels. The murals by an Emirati artist embrace a grid-like arrangement to tell stories in graffiti-like pictoglyphs.

Dubai Health Authorities (DHA) intended to open a new Health Centre in an existing community mall in Nad Al Sheba. One of the key aspects involved the enclosure of an exisitng, open courtyard as well as the requirement to create a green environment. A three-dimensional roof structure with randomized louver-like fillings derived from the logo and draws a playful shadow image on the floor. Open and closed vitrines with bamboo plant create a green separation and privacy screen. Remaining elements were predominately defined by the brand book.

The massive pivot door swings out to guide people who stroll on Alserkal Avenue into the art gallery. Inside, visitors experience the industrial dimensions and character of the original warehouse: a large and open space all in white, the raw steel structure visible in the upper half while a minimalist interior conceals the same below, and natural light evenly diffused through the entire hall. The open mezzanine leaves an exhibition space on the backside with a different atmosphere: vertically oriented, dramatic and with additional light flooding in from the side. Various smaller rooms nestle below the entresol; they serve as video installation rooms, offices, lounge, wet areas and storage space.

Fine materials combined with soft shapes create a welcoming yet sophisticated atmosphere. General internal walls are feathered in white on the bottom to provide privacy and transparent on the top to evoke the feeling of space. The feeling of a continuous space is enhanced by lighting elements reaching beyond rooms and zones. Glass pebbles with integrated LED lights distort the view into the meeting room but let the only natural light to reach the reception area in. This feature division can be operated like a screen or an interactive installation and is sandwiched between two glass panels.

The back-offices are organized according to the divisions in an open floor arrangement with manager’s offices.

The interior design embraces the corporate identity of the bank while infusing it with subtle references to the local culture. Openness and light-flooded rooms dominate while guaranteeing the required privacy. The modern design works with minimalistic design solutions and reoccurring interventions that build the theme of this project and give it a sophisticated consistency.

The design reflects the urban-Asian chic aspect of the cuisine offered at this place located in an upscale, mixed-use development. Traditional wooden screens were reassembled to frame the bar, elegant doors lead into private dining rooms, free-standing booths with a pixelated design create cozy nooks to eat. The hipster alfresco lounge caters to the relaxation-seeking crowd and the atmosphere embraces the mix of a cosmopolitan city that blends differences into a colorful, vibrant whole.

The architecture explores along patterns to find a contemporary voice of the Islamic culture. Either the shapes or the principles are based upon traditional decorative works of the region. However, the application and the materialization are a further development with today’s technology and understanding. Most of the area is dedicated to dining, with some loosely separate family rooms often seen in the region. A smaller lounge area and with a juice bar caters more to the young crowd.

The moving patterns of travelers defined the layout of the TAG Heuer boutique at the New Doha International Airport in order to maximize visual exposure, to increase number of walk-in visitors and to enhance the product experience inside the shop. While the design follows the corporate architecture in terms of materials and finishing, unique elements have been added such as the show-case storage, the TAG Heuer World window and the running display window.

The luxury candle brand “Light of Sakina” builts its brand around the idea of a sanctuary and sensuality. The intimate space is defined by pointed arches which create a courtyard feeling with an arabesque flair. To emphasize a feeling of open sky, the walls merge into the ceiling. The color scheme remains in warm-of-white shades with a hint of gold in selected details and sandy hues in the marble floor. Individual acloves highlight special treasures. Ample of storage space in integrated in the wall and display space.

New Garhoud Bridge sets off from a dynamic abutment and skims gently 520 meters across the Dubai creek. The organic design softens the linear structure and gives it a distinct rhythm. The piers reach out to hold the bridge elegantly sixteen meters above the water; their asymmetrical shapes find their mirrored partner and create a balanced whole. Simple yet precise detailing enhances the dynamic design and give the bridge more a character of a piece of architecture than one of an infrastructural project.

The Time Tunnel connects not only two land masses but two different worlds: the ordinary main land with the visionary Palm Jebel Ali. Visualizing this transition from one sphere into the other, from one time zone into another, the Time Tunnel funnels two metro tracks, an eight-lane highway and a gondola for pedestrians. This winning project draws inspiration from works by Indian artist Anish Kapoor. While his structures work solely on the base of tension, the Time Tunnel is based on compression.

The bridge to Palm Jebel Ali is part of the Welcoming Island master plan and as such follows the same design ideology as the architectural development. In a rather formalistic approach, the same parabolic line defines not only buildings but also the piers, the abutments, the body, the lights and the decorative elements of the bridge. The consistency of the geometric theme and the variation thereof in combination with a stringent concept for materialization, color scheme and lighting design result in a compelling yet cost efficient bridge design.

The astronomer Al Beruni discovered the oscillating movement of our planet. His findings inspired the surface of the 3d tiles used to create Al Nadi Tower. These tiles are rotated in space along all three axes and then reassembled to create the tower. The principle of creating larger formations out of identical pieces has been used for centuries in the kufi script. In this design-to-manufacture project, a geometric pattern has been applied that matches with the neighboring piece regardless of its configuration.

A 6m wide boardwalk along the entire crescent shall increase the attractiveness of the Palm for pedestrians. Themed clusters of modular kiosks and a shopping arcade entertain the strolling crowd along the 11km. Piers at each end of the walk reach out of the sea like a water lilies. The body is dematerialized to a light honeycomb structure that inverts its appearance during the night. Rippled shells cover the upper deck like petals – only to balance back and creating an open-air space: making the sky the limits!

The design of the bus station incorporates all elements in a modular system from the roof down to the foundation. This guarantees quick installation and also allows full flexibility in regards of air conditioned areas due to methodical insulation. As a result, small and large configurations are possible as well as later expansion and modifications. A traditional pattern serves as decorative theme used for furniture, light and glass panels. The axial layout on the panels allows rotation in all axis which increases the visual variation.

The Mashrabiya Cabana fascinates through its arabesque, aperiodic pattern that spans continuously around the cube – sometimes as structural elements, sometimes as decorative application. The dimension of the work as well as the uninterrupted character of the pattern create a unique perception of space where one (almost) loses orientation and the feeling for gravity. The Mashrabiya Cabana not only serves as a place for intimate, social gatherings but also as a stage for performances to a larger crowd.

Nine tubes fly a formation in space like an aerobatic patrol. This synchronal air ballet forms a bench, turns around and flattens to a lounge chair, rises with a twist to screen off views before fanning apart to create a huge sun sail and channeling again to become the back side of the very same bench. The dynamic appearance visualizes the activities of the F1 race course which the structure overlooks. The form also corresponds with the organic architecture of the main building.

A ramp leads in a generous bend from the street to the entrance of the villa. The path is accompanied by a folding structure that constantly changes the experience of the lane. These untreated metal sheets not only serve as retaining walls but also pleat to steps, benches, planters and mailbox. The lights for the path are integrated into the foot of the banister; spotlights for the metal sculpture are hidden below the path.
